Spiel.Digital

We have had an awesome long Spiel weekend, full with board gaming, meeting old friends and making new. All in the comfort of our cosy living room, with everything we need, and with the to played board games transmitted onto our screen and the explanations over the speakers. Sounds wonderful to me, I even didn't had to do my hair or wear pants the whole weekend and all our food was nice and easy delivered.

With all new experiences, we have to get used to it to be able to fully enjoy it. At my very first Spiel in Essen, I had no clue where to go and definitely couldn't find everything right away. Same as in the new digital environment, I had to find my way. Actually I wasn't even planning on attending Spiel.Digital, because of course I prefer to play for real, feel the cards and the components in my hand, instead of a trackball. That is why I play board games and not video games. I also imagined Spiel 2020 not to be like this.

I want to point out, for our Spiel coverage this year, I also only had the opportunity to take screenshots instead of photos. Which I found very unfortunate, because I love to wander around the halls and take photos of everything I see. Those are like the foundation of my reviews. So you may understand, I have had sincere doubts of writing something about this whole digital version of Spiel, but along the way on my Road to Spiel, I became more and more enthusiastic.

Despite Corona, the Spiel organization Friedhelm Merz Verlag brought a whole lot of board game enthusiasts around the globe together to play board games. We have played a couple of our most wanted games, we have talked to familiars and friends, we met with designers, we have played prototypes from indie publishers, we laughed, we cried, we won, we lost and we were freaking tired in the end. Just like a normal Spiel.

Thanks for creating this wonderful experience considering the circumstances we are in, it was another awesome Spiel weekend. We did what we liked most, with like minded people, creating memories forever, while playing a game or more.
